Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” May 5, 1950:

Mrs. Nora M. Johnston, 78, died Thursday at 7 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. Wesley Smith of 540 Hamilton street.

The daughter of John and Mary Long, she was born September 20, 1871, in Van Wert, Iowa. Her marriage to Charles S. Gillette took place December 24, 1891. Her marriage to Seth T. Johnston took place May 22, 1918. He preceded her in death November 30, 1942. A resident of Ottumwa for the past two years, she was a member of the Christian church.

Mrs. Johnston is survived by one son, Howard A. Gillette of Coal Valley, Ill.; two daughters, Mrs. Pearl E. Smith of Ottumwa and Mrs. Hettie M. Burns of Moline, Ill.; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, one sister and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Johnson funeral chapel in charge of the Rev. Sherman R. Hanson of the Davis Street Christian church. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn cemetery [sic-Nora is buried in Shaul Cemetery]. Grandsons will act as pallbearers.
