Martha H. Black, 87, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, in the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Kramer Funeral Home, by the Rev. Al Polito. Burial: 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Ottumwa Calvary Cemetery, Ottumwa. Friends may call from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Martha was born April 21, 1916, in Ottumwa, the daughter of Carl and Jeanette Williams Spry. She graduated from Ottumwa High School with the Class of 1934. Martha was an accomplished swimmer and enjoyed being a lifeguard at the Ottumwa Municipal Pool. She continued her education at the Ottumwa Business College, eventually working as a secretary at Rockwell Computer Division for many years.

Martha was the great-granddaughter of Richard Warden, founder of the Ottumwa Courier, and the granddaughter of Dr. A.O. Williams, a prominent Ottumwa physician. She was married to Glen Black for 25 years.

Survivors include two sons, Keith (Lynn) Black of Cedar Rapids and John (Patricia) Black of Monticello; four grandchildren, Craig (Amy) Black, Bonnie Black and Maria and Carlos Black; and two great-grandchildren, Alex and Emily Black.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen; and a sister, Charlotte Black.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American Heart Association, the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation or a charity of the donor's choice.
