Dale Sasseen

Dale Sasseen, 98, of Ottumwa and formerly of Richland, died Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 9, 2014, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center in Ottumwa.

The funeral is planned for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Richland United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Carl Benge and the Rev. Wilbur Morfitt officiating. Burial will be at Richland Friends Cemetery.

Visitation at Gould Funeral Home in Richland will open at 4 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6-7:30 p.m., followed by a Masonic memorial service led by Frank Wilson.

Memorials for Richland United Methodist Church or Richland Lodge NO. 38 can be left at the funeral home, church or mailed to the family at 308 Pike Road, Ottumwa 52501.

Mr. Sasseen was born Jan. 26, 1916, in Abingdon, the son of Austin and Emma Belle Paxson Sasseen. He married Rosamond Hadley Jan. 29, 1938, in Burlington. She preceded him in death.

He attended Packwood Consolidated School and graduated in 1933.

He and his wife farmed for a few years then moved to Blakesburg in 1948 where they purchased and operated the Blakesburg Telephone Exchange. In 1952, they purchased a hardware and plumbing store in Richland, which they operated for about 25 years before he became a hardware salesman for Drake Hardware Co. for five years.

Mr. Sasseen entered politics and served two terms as Keokuk County supervisor and six years on the board of review.

He retired in 1999.

He and his wife traveled all the United States, Hawaii, Alaska and Mexico.

They hosted a German Exchange student in 1968, who later became a doctor and returns with is family for regular annual visits.

Mr. Sasseen was a member of the Richland United Methodist church and became a 64-year member of Richland Ledge No. 38, A.F. & A.M.

Survivors include: one son Keith Sasseen and wife Barb of Ottumwa; two granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and "special son" Christian Stabenow of Schifferstadt, Germany.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by: his parents; daughter-in-law, Phyllis Sasseen; three sisters, Vera Huber, Margaret Roberts and Mabel Wolcott; and two brothers, Houston Sasseen and Russell "Bill" Sasseen.
