John Hinshaw, 72, of Ankeny, and formerly of Richland, died Monday afternoon, Nov. 17, 2014, at Sunnyview Nursing Home in Ankeny.

Arrangements are pending at Gould Funeral Home in Richland.

John Dayle Hinshaw

John Dayle Hinshaw, 72, of Ankeny, IA died peacefully from natural causes at the Sunnyview Care Center in Ankeny, Iowa on Monday, November 17, 2014.

He was born July 16, 1942, in Richland, Iowa, to Kermit and Janet (Trigg) Hinshaw, he attended Richland High School and graduated from Parsons College in 1965.

John spent the first part of his career as a trainer of Standardbred racehorses, working side by side with his father, Kermit and brother, Korwin. He spent the second half of his professional career as the Director of the Horse and Dog Breeding Program for the State of Iowa. After retiring, he continued to promote the Standardbred horse industry.

John was a 32nd degree Mason and was a member of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine of Des Moines. He enjoyed Iowa Hawkeye football and endured countless years of frustration as a devoted Chicago Cubs fan. More than anything, John enjoyed his family, friends and grandchildren.

He leaves a wife of 40 years, Reka (Dickman); his daughter, Amy Nyren, and husband Andrew, of Milwaukee; his son, Mark Hinshaw, and wife Kirsten (Behle) of Ankeny; and three beloved grandchildren, Ella Nyren, James Nyren and Taylor Hinshaw.

He is survived by his brother, Korwin (Judi) of Fairfield and sisters, Emily Emonin (John) of Marion, and Sallie Hayes (Terry) of Fairfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Celebration of life services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 22, at Woolson Friends Church, Richland, Iowa, with Pastors Andrew Nyren and Frosty Van Vorst officiating.

Burial will be in Richland Friends Cemetery.

Open visitation will be held on Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Woolson Friends Church. The family will greet friends immediately preceding the service 10-11 A.M.

Memorials have been established to Saint Jude Hospice (Des Moines) and On With Life (Ankeny) and may be left at the church or mailed to the family at 419 NE 31st Street, Ankeny, Iowa 50021.

Gould Funeral Home of Richland is assisting the family.
