Edith R. Swartz

Edith R. Swartz, 91, of Memphis, Mo., and formerly of Keosauqua died at 5:10 p.m. April 19, 1993, at Scotland County Care Center in Memphis.

She was born Jan. 1, 1902, near Oquawka, Ill., to Harry and Jessie De Vore Rider. She married Vernon E. Swartz on July 20, 1938, in Keosauqua. He died Sept. 10, 1974.

She lived her early life in Henderson County, Ill., and later moved with her parents to Van Buren County in 1920. She was a 1921 graduate of Keosauqua High School. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and taught school in Van Buren County rural schools for 17 years. She also had been a nurse's aide at Farmington nursing home and at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua. She and her husband farmed in the Center Chapel community southeast of Keosauqua. She and her husband's death, she moved to town and later entered the care center at Memphis in 1989. She was a member of Center Chapel United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Delphian Club, Van Buren County Retired Teachers Association, and had been active in the Keosauqua Senior Citizens Group.

She is survived by two daughters, Verla Courtright and her husband, Duane, of Memphis, Mo., and Edna Savage and her husband, Everett, of Stronghurst, Ill.; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and Robert Rider; a sister, Martha Wright; and a grandson and granddaughter.

The service was held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 23, 1993 at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, the Rev. S. Gale Hawhee officiating. Graveside services and burial was at 3:45 p.m. Friday in the Oquawka, Ill. Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to her church or Scotland County Care Center and may be left at the funeral home.
