OBITUARY.
THORNBURG—Martha T. Thornburg, wife of L. W. Thornburg, and daughter of Thomas and Jane Miller, died after a painful illness, at her home three miles northwest of Ottumwa, Iowa, at 7 1/2 o’clock a. m., on Friday, Jan. 9, 1880, aged 51 years, 6 months and 14 days.

The deceased was born June 25?, 1825, near Morefield [Moorefield] Chapel, Clarke county, Ohio. In the fall of 1842 she removed with her parents to Pittsburg, Van Buren county, Iowa. She was married to L. W. Thornburg on the 8th day of April, 1845, and with him removed to Randolph county, Indiana, in 1852; returned to Keosauqua, Iowa, in 18??; and became a resident of Wapello county, Iowa, in 1872.

She was converted and united with the Methodist church at 14 years of age, with which church she was connected at the time of her death, having been a consistent member for 40 years. Warm hearted and consistent by nature she was devotedly attached to her family and friends who suffer an irreparable loss by her death.—A true and faithful Christian, she had no fears of the future. Seeing the dark valley she caught a glimpse of the sunshine beyond and longed to go. A few hours before her death her husband asked her if all was well, and with a face beaming with the consciousness of immortality she replied, “yes, yes.” The great suffering for the last [nine] months, she bore her misery with the fortitude and patience of a true Christian. A husband, five children, and a large circle of relatives and friends are left to mourn her early departure.

But their loss is her infinite gain.
A soul from prison is released
And freed from its bodily pain.
Why should mourners weep now
When God recalls his own,
And bids them leave a world of woe,
For an immortal crown.
