Melvin D. Crist

Melvin D. Crist, 82, of Keosauqua died at 5:20 a.m. Monday, November 8, 1993, at Jefferson County Hospital, Fairfield. He was born March 20, 1911, at Stuart, Iowa to Edgar B. and Martha Harness Crist. He married Esther Robbins April 16, 1932, at Logan, Iowa. He grew up in western Iowa, farmed near Castana and Farson and for many years near Douds. The Crists wintered in Donna, Texas for 19 years and have lived the past two years in Country Lane Apartments, Keosauqua. He was a member of Christ United Methodists Church, Douds, a Past Master and 50-year member of Celestial Lodge No. 413, A.F. & A.M., Douds, a Past patron of Twin City Chapter No. 258, order of Eastern Star, Douds and for several years was active in the Donna, Texas United Methodist Church. He had served on the Douds-Leando School Board, Van Buren County Board of Education and Farmers Home Administration Board, had been a District Soil Conservation Commissioner and had been active in the Democratic Party.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, William of Davenport, and Ronald of Denver, Colorado; three daughters, Yvonne Strang, of Cantril, Janis Mullikin of Brighton and Marilyn Umphrey of Douds; 17 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren; and two brothers, George of Coralville and Ed of Cuba, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert, William, Jaye and Maurice Crist; and four sisters, Edna Fowler, May Lydolph, Martha Roun Johnson and Alice Guenther Ceislak.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 10, in Christ United Methodist Church, Douds. Reverend Michael Druhl officiated. Burial was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery near Douds. Masonic services were held Tuesday at the Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua. Memorials to his church or Keosauqua Senior Citizens Center may be left at the funeral home.
