Lucy M. McGaffey, age 89, of Fairfield, formerly of Washington died Monday, May 16 at the Parkview Care Center, Fairfield.
She was born August 8, 1901 in Van Buren County to John Kimmel and Louise Miner. She was reared and educated in the Van Buren County schools.
She was married Sept. 7, 1919 to David A. McGaffey in Keosauqua, who died Jan. 30, 1977.
In 1946, through the VFW she along with her husband started a committee to loan hospital equipment people in Washington County. In 1949 they started furnishing used furniture and clothing in cooperation with welfare agencies. She received the Rotary Community Service Award in 1970, and was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary and a member of the United Methodist Church in Fairfield.
Survivors include a son, Gerald McGaffey of Washington, a daughter, Dorothy Hudson of Fairfield, 16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, one brother, Henry Kimmel of Milton, five sisters, Edith Fisher of Toulon, Ill., Marietta Canaday of Selma, Iowa, Ruth Magill of Davenport, Helen Leydan of Washington and Eleanor Stalder of Brighton. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son and three brothers.
Services will be Thursday, May 9 at 1:30 p.m. at the Jones Funeral Home in Washington, Rev. Clair O'Dell officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery at Birmingham. Memorials may be made to the Cancer Society.
