HAZEL BELLE MADDEN

Hazel Belle Madden, daughter of John and Mary Warren French, was born November 7, 1893 near Farmington and departed this life the morning of Tuesday, April 8, 1986 at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital, Keosauqua, at the age of 92.

She married Floyd Madden, August 23, 1913 at her parents home and they lived their married life in the Mt. Sterling community. In 1923 Mr. and Mrs. Madden began operating the Madden General Store in Mt. Sterling. Mr. Madden died in 1951 and Mrs. Madden continues running the business with her son and daughter-in-law, Max and Evelyn Madden. The store was sold in 1981. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Madden was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.

Survivors in addition to Max and Evelyn of Mt. Sterling are two grandsons, Daniel Floyd Madden of Cedar Rapids and John Max Madden of West Des Moines, two great granddaughters, Sara Jane and Susan Elizabeth Madden.

Mrs. Madden was baptized in the new Christian Church of Mt. Sterling, of which as a young person. After her church burned, she became active in the United Methodist Church of Mt. Sterling and was a member of United Methodist Women.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 10, 1985 at 11 a.m. in the Mt. Sterling United Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Butler officiating. Interment was in Harness Cemetery, Mt. Sterling. A memorial was established for the Mt. Sterling United Methodist Church. Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua was in charge of arrangements.
