SELMA - Bruce M. Bates, 72, of Selma died Aug. 15, 1986, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

He was born Aug. 6, 1914, in Selma to Harry and Carrie Duke Bates. He was a lifetime resident of the Selma and Eldon communities, where he had farmed. He was retired from Rockwell International in Fairfield. He was a former 4-H leader and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Troy. He married Mildred Beghtol on April 10, 1937.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Barbara Weeks of Afton, Mary Jo Balmer of Troy and Cheryle Miller of Warsaw, Ill.; two sons, Richard of Drakesville and Harry of Peoria, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mabel Northrup of Gerber, Cali., Cecil Lasley of Red Bluff, Calif., Helen Tiller of Charleston Heights, S.C., and LeAma Tallman of Floris; and three brothers, Ernest of Douds, Maynard of Chico, Calif., and Milt of Eldon.

The service will be 1 p.m. today at Campbell Funeral Home in Eldon, the Rev. Leonard Miller officiating. Burial will be in Eldon Cemetery.

Memorials to North Sixth Floor, Iowa Methodist Medical Center may be left at the Funeral Home.
