Train kills Fairfield man

FAIRFIELD - A Fairfield man was "sliced in half" by Burlington Northern train early Saturday, Fairfield police reported.

Ed Wixom, 48, died immediately when the westbound train ran over his prone body. Police said they believe Wixom was walking home and may have tripped on the tracks. His body was thrown close to the tracks.

Manned by a Burlington crew, the cargoless train was headed for Wyoming.

His body was taken to an Ottumwa pathologist for an autopsy. The incident is under investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff's department.

Edward L. Wixom

FARMINGTON - Services for Edward L. Wixom, 48, killed at Fairfield when struck by a train last weekend, will be held at Hofbauer Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Wednesday, the Rev. James Rozendaal officiating. Burial will be in Greenglade Cemetery.

Mr. Wixom was born Dec. 11, 1935, in Keokuk, to Sam and Peggy Bailey Wixom. He had been a resident of Fairfield for 15 years. He was a laborer. He was a member of the Baptist Church.

Surviving: His mother, Peggy Robins, Hillsboro; four sons, Tony, Ft. Madison, Criss, Mt. Pleasant, Eric, Fairfield, and Edward of California; two daughters, Jeanie Lehman, Spring Parker, Texas, and Donna Droz, Ottumwa; three brothers, Richard Wixom, Hillsboro, Darrell Wixom, Burlington, and Bill Wixom of California; and ten grandchildren.

EDWARD L. WIXOM

Edward L. Wixom, 48, of Fairfield died Saturday, September 8, in Fairfield.

Born December 11, 1935 in Keokuk, he was the son of Sam and Peggy Bailey Wixom.

He was a Fairfield resident for 15 years, a laborer, and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his mother, Peggy Robins of Hillsboro; four sons, Edward of California, Tony of Fort Madison, Chris of Mt. Pleasant and Eric of Fairfield; two daughters, Jeanie Lehman of Spring Parker, Tennessee and Donna Droz of Ottumwa; three brothers, Bill Wixom of California, Darrell Wixom of Farmington and Richard Wixom of Hillsboro; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and one son.

The funeral was held Wednesday, September 12, 1984 at 11 a.m. at the Hofbauer Funeral Home in Farmington. The Rev. Jim Rozendaal officiated. Burial was in Greenglade Cemetery, Farmington.
