Eva Umphrey

Mrs. Eva Umphrey, 80, died at her home in Wayland at approximately 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, 1984.

She was born Nov. 5, 1903 at Victoria, Ill., to David and Edith Stevenson Matheny. She married Sherman Umphrey on May 22, 1929 at Galesburg, Ill. He died Feb. 15, 1977.

Mrs. Umphrey was a former Birmingham area resident before moving to Wayland, a member of The Wayland United Methodist Church, its United Methodist Women, order of Eastern Star No. No. 494. and a past Matron, J of T.T.T. in Wayland and the American Legion Auxiliary. She formerly owned and operated a preschool in Wayland and had taught school in Van Buren County.

Surviving are a son, Donn Umphrey of Raytown, Mo.; a brother, Lester Matheny of New London and two grandsons.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 10:30 a.m. at the Wayland United Methodist Church with interment in the North Hill Cemetery, the Rev. Richard Dunn officiating. An order of Eastern Star service was held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Beatty Funeral home, Wayland, after which the family received friends. A memorial has been established for her church.
