Death of Legrand Merrick at Age of
77, Who Had Lived Nearly
All His Life in Van
Buren County.

FARMINGTOiN, la., May 12.—Legrand Merrick was born in Carmel, N. Y., January 18, 1843. At the age of ten he came with his parents to Iowa and settled in Van Buren county, where he has spent most of his life, with the exception of about a year which was spent in Montana when a young man. He was married to Penmia Ann Slaughter on October 7, 1866. To this union were born seven children, six sons and one daughter, all of whom, with his wife survive him, with the exception of one son, Rufus Emerson, who diet in infancy. The sons are: Thomas, of Centralia, Wash. Oren, of Weilington, Kas.; Francis, of Strasburg, Colo.; Robert, of Keokuk, and Samuel and Ruth of Farmington. He leaves also his aged mother, two brothers and two sisters, besides twenty-nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn his loss. About the yeaar 1870 he was converted and united wit the Fairview Baptist church, but later changed his membership to the Bethel church, where he remained a member until death released him from his earthly sufferings on May 10, 1920, at the age of 77 years, 3 months and 22 days. The funeral was held at the Baptist church Wednesday at 2 p.m., preached by the pastor, the Rev. J. A. Cochrane. Interment was in McDaniel cemetery.
