Derward Van Horn

Derward, son of Elmer and Della Randolph Van Horn was born May 16, 1917, at Stiles, Iowa, and died of a heart condition at Mesa, Arizona, Wednesday, March 25, having reached the age of 63 years to ten ten months and nine days.

Derward was the youngest of the family of 13 children. He graduated from the Bloomfield High School in 1936.

On April 24, 1938, at Bloomfield, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Mabel Ruth Bell. To this union two daughters were born. The family farmed in Davis County, Iowa, and in 1951 they bought Cantril General Store managing it until 1955 when the family moved to Knoxville, Iowa, and purchased the Davis Paint Store. The couple retired in 1979.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Knoxville, Iowa, and when he was active in business a member of the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club.

He was a loyal husband, father, grandfather and a friend to all who knew him.

Preceeding him in death were his parents, four sisters and two brothers.

Surviving are his wife, Mabel Ruth, two daughters, Mrs. Paul "Joyce" Dennison of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Mrs. David "Cynthia" Stover of Des Moines, Iowa, grandchildren, Lisa and Laine of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Paul and Page of Des Moines, Iowa, three sisters, Mrs. Dale "Mildred" Merrill of Treynor, Iowa, Mrs. Don "Polly" Merrill of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Mrs. Mina Bridges of Chula Vista, California, also surviving are three brothers, Leith Van Horn of Fremont, Iowa, Dewitt Van Horn of Bloomfield, Iowa and Garold Van Horn of Drakesville, Iowa.

Services were held at the First United Methodist Church of Knoxville, Iowa, Sunday, March 29, 1981, with Rev. Carl Wilson officiating. Burial was in the Drakesville Cemetery at Drakesville, Iowa. The family has established a memorial fund in his memory. Bybee & Davis Funeral Home of Knoxville, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
