Harvey W. Oakes

Harvey W. Oakes, 70, of 1015 Locust died at his home Monday at 2 p.m. He had a heart condition for several years.

Mr. Oakes had been an employe of the CB & Q Railroad for 37 years, retiring as an engineer in 1959.

The son of Miles and Phronie Mackey Oakes, he was born at Yadkinville, N.C., Feb. 22, 1895. He had been a resident of Ottumwa for the past 40 years.

He was a member of the B of LF and E.

His marriage to Hattie Bradbury took place March 10, 1918 in Davis County. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Lloyd E. and Richard L. Oakes, both of Tucson, Ariz., and Franklin L. Oakes of Chicago; one daughter, Mrs. Florence Daugherty of Independence, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; three half brothers, John Oakes of Milton, and Luke and Roy Mason both of Yadkinville, N.C.; three half sisters, Mrs. Beulah Macey of Yadkinville, Mrs. Nettie Wilkerson of Salem, N.C., and Mrs. Blanche Hare of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were one daughter in infancy and one sister.

The service will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Chapel in charge of the Rev. Ellsworth Walker of Wesley Methodist Church.

Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.
