Melvin Story

The funeral service for Melvin Story, 64, of North English was held Tuesday, Jan. 5, at 1:30 p.m. at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. Burial was in South English. Mr. Story died Saturday, Jan. 2 at 11 a.m. at a hospital in Sigourney of a stroke, according to word received at Farmington.

Mr. Story was born and reared in Farmington. For many years he was a resident of Waterloo and a state representative from Black Hawk county in 1967. Mr. Story had retired from the North-western Bell Telephone Co. in 1966 as independent company relations supervisor after 40 years of employment with the company. He was elected to the Iowa state legislature as representative from Black Hawk county in November of 1966 and retired from the legislature in 1967 because of ill health.

He and his wife later moved from Waterloo to North English.

He joined Northwestern Bell in 1926 as a construction worker. He advanced to foreman in 1929, became an engineer in 1944 and occupied that position until 1953, when he became independent company relations representative.

He married Beatrice Buchanan of South English in Bethany, Mo., in 1932.

Mr. Story was a member of the First Congregational church. He was a member of the Blue Lodge, the Consistory and the Shrine Masonic orders, and a member of the Telephone Pioneers of American. While in Waterloo he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce.

Surviving are his wife, Beatrice, of North English; two sons, William of Chicago and David of North English.
