Hazel A. Barker

Hazel A. Barker, daughter of Mernice H. and Nora Ellis Barker, was born March 21, 1908, near Guymon, Oklahoma, and departed this life Tuesday, July 24, 1973, at the age of 65. Her death was the result of an auto accident in Green County, Iowa.

As an infant she moved with her parents to Van Buren County. She was graduated from Douds High School and Parsons College and took graduate work at the State University of Iowa.

For a number of years she taught in Van Buren County rural schools and from 1947 until her retirement in June of this year she was a teacher in the Muscatine school system.

She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, the Orderof Eastern Star, White Shrine Business and Professional Women and Rebekahs, all of Muscatine. She was a member of the State and National Education Associations and a charter member of Psi Chapter of Alph Delta Kappa, honorary teacher's sorority. She had held various offices in a number of these organizations.

Remaining to cherish her memory are a sister, Mrs. Maxine Miller of Birmingham, three brothers William and Ellis Barker of Douds and Joe Barker of Guthrie Center, two nephews, Rich and Maholon Barker, three nieces, Linda and Martha Barker and Mrs. Cathy Wombwell, other relatives and many friends. An infant sister, Jennie, preceded her in death.

Hazel will be remembered or her life service to youth through her long and distinguished teaching career, to her Lord and mankind through her church and various civic and fraternal organizations, and to her family and friends through countless acts of love and friendship. The recollection of her deeds and accomplishments will live on in the memories of those who knew her as a fitting memorial to her active and useful life.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 27, 1973, at 11 a.m. at Christ United Methodist church in Douds with the Rev. Stanley Woeste of Muscatine officiating. Vocalists were Mrs. Keith A. Smith and Mrs. Robert Pedrick, accompanied by Jon Finney.

Pall bearers were Davis Pollock, Charles Morris, Marvin Roush, Arnold Barker, Hubert Roush and Robert Roush. Interment was in the Boston Cemetery south of Keosauqua. Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home at Douds.
