Darrell R. Rains Killed In Accident
**Handwritten: 1972

Darrell Robert Rains, 19, of Birmingham was killed at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, in a one-car accident one and one fourth miles southeast of Birmingham on the Birmingham-Stockport blacktop. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rains of rural Birmingham. Passengers in the car were Jack Diephius, 17, son of Mrs. Madge Diephius and Fred Haynes, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Haynes of Bonaparte, were treated at Van Buren Count Memorial Hospital at Keosauqua and released.

Van Buren County Sheriff Orville Lee said Rains was traveling southeast of the blacktop road when the car went off the road on a curve, hit some fill rock in the ditch and rolled over twice. Rains was pinned under the car. The body was taken to the Burch Funeral Home in Birmingham. This accident brought the death toll to six teen-agers and one adult in Van Buren County this year.

For the third consecutive week-end, Van Buren County lost a teen-ager due to an auto accident.

DARRELL ROBERT RAINS

Darrell Robert Rains was born October 5, 1953, at Keosauqua, the son of Robert and Beulah Parrott Rains. His parents survive and two brothers, Roy Rains of Birmingham and Allen Rains of Fairfield; one sister, Carolyn Parker of Bonaparte.

He was employed at the Sstockport locker and graduated from Van Buren Community High School this spring. He just finished serving his six month active duty in the Iowa National Guard at Fort Dix, New Jersey.

The funeral service was held Monday, Nov. 13th, at 2 p.m. in the Birmingham Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Millard Marshall officiated. Burial was in the Zion Lutheran cemetery at Douds. Arrangements were by the Burch Funeral Home in Birmingham.
