Christopher C. Swalwell

The Rev. Christopher C. Swalwell, 79, of Farmington, died at 7:10 a.m. Thursday, June 1, in Henry County Memorial Hospital, Mount Pleasant. He was hospitalized since Tuesday following a stroke.

Born April 22, 1893 at Collins, Ia., he was the son of Thomas and Harriet Kimberly Swalwell. His marriage to Matilda Ball took place Dec. 20, 1914, at Collins. She died August 29, 1954.

He married Eva Wilkinson on Feb. 17, 1956 at Lakeland, Fla. She survives.

He graduated from Asbury college Wilmar, Ky. and John Fletcher college, Oskaloosa and was ordained in 1927. He was a former pastor of the Farmington Church of the Nazarene and served churches at Hendricks, Ivanhoe and Redmond Falls in Minn.; Sioux City and Milton in Iowa; Freeman, Turkey Valley, Platte and Sioux Falls in South Dakota; and Quincy, Ill. He did evangelistic work.

Surviving, in addition to his widow, are: one son, Irving Swalwell of Albuquerque, N.M.; three daughters, Dr. Alice Hawkins of Northridge, Calif., Mrs. Rosalie Cutler of Keosauqua and Mrs. L.C. (Anna) Von Seggen of Farmington; one stepson, Lee Overbey of Redwood Falls, Minn.; and three step-daughters, Alice Brace of Olivia, Minn., Grace Geselle of Nampa, Idaho and Marjorie Wilkinson of Eagle Lake, Minn.; two brothers, Charles Swalwell of Newton; and three sisters, Eva Bark, Des Moines, Miss Ada Swalell and Miss Belva Swalwell, both of Collins; 43 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, two sons in infancy and seven brothers and sisters.

The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 3, in the Farmington Church of the Nazarene. The Rev. H.E. Hegstrom of Des Moines and the Rev. Eddie West of Farmington officiated.

Burial was in Greenglade cemetery.
