Byron R. Church

Mr. Bryon R. Church, a resident of Henry County all of his life, passed away at the University Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa on Tuesday May 30, 1972 at 5:10 P.M. He was 61 years, 10 months, and 18 days old at the time of his death.

Byron Rex Church was born on a farm near Hillsboro, Iowa on July 8, 1910. He was the son of Floyd M. and Blanche Percival Church. His marriage to Evelyn Hammond took place in the Hammond home of Walnut, Iowa on October 6, 1937. This union was blessed with three children.

The Churches settled on a farm north of Hillsboro and in 1941 they moved to their present location. Byron attended Parsons College of Fairfield, Iowa for 2 years. He was rural mail carrier for the past 2 years and has been a substitute carrier for the past 13 years. He was a member of the Hillsboro School Board for many years and was a board member the first year that Harmony Community School was organized.

Mr. Church was an active and faithful member of the Hillsboro Baptist Church. He joined the Church by baptism on December 9, 1923. Byron has held many offices in the church and was Deacon Sunday School Superintendent, Vice Moderator, and Church School Teacher at the time of his death. He served wherever and whenever needed. He will be greatly missed by all the members and friends of his Church.

Surviving Mr. Church are: his wife, Evelyn of Hillsboro, Ia.; three daughters, Kathlene Kay (Mrs. Bert Vandenberg) of Donnelson, Ia.; Jean (Mrs. David Trueblood of Newark, Ohio, Jeanette (Mrs. Ronald Bower) of Fairfield, Ia.; two sisters, Mildred (Mrs. H.J. Benton) and Phyllis (Mrs. Clifford Robbins) both of Malvern, Ia. He also leaves to mourn his departure seven grandchildren, 2 nephews, many neighbors, and a great host of friends. His parents and 1 infant sister preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Friday June 1, 1972 at 2 P.M. from the Hillsboro Baptist Church. The pastor of the Church Rev. L.H. Smith officiated, with Mrs. Vinton Hoaglin at the organ.

Casket bearers were Carroll Crane, Vinton Hoaglin, Verl Shelman, Hugh Breuer, Phil Hixson, and William Whitaker.

The Honorary Bearers were L.T. Harlan, Burch Boley, Craig Smutz, and Earl Barton.

Interment was in the Hillsboro Cemetery, with the Beatty-Jennings Chapel of Salem, in charge of the arrangements.
