Women Killed In cident Tuesday

Three Milton women were killed outright at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday as their small foreign car skidded out of control into the path of an oil transport near Milton.

Dead at the drive, Miss Geneva Bell, 62, her mother, Mrs. Roda Bell, 87, and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Janey Bell of Milton.

The Volkswagen In which the women were riding was headed west on Highway 2, one mile east of Milton, in a blinding snowstorm, when it went out of control and into the path of the transport driven by Kenneth Locker, 56, of Bloomfield. Locker was not injured. Damage to his tractor was estimated at $500.

Neither vehicle left the road, according to Sheriff Orville Lee, who was assisted in the investigation by the Iowa Highway Patrol. No charges were filed. The bodies were taken to the Wellborn Funeral Home in Milton.

The deaths are the first highway fatalities in Van Buren County during 1971. About four inches of new snow fell during a short period of time Tuesday with visibility near zero in most areas of the southwest.

Rhoda Elva Bell, 87, was born Nov. 2, 1883 near Selma to John and Mary Etta Frazier Marshall. She married Robert C. Bell on Jan. 15, 1908.

Survivors include four sons, Marshall of Marion, Bonar of Milton, Jay Q. of Fairfield and Max E. of Kirksville, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Elliott Marshall of Farmington.

Geneva Isabel Bell was born Oct. 28, 1908 at Milton to Robert and Rhoda Marshal Bell. She never married and was a LPN in Minneapolis General Hospital until retiring. She is survived by four brothers.

Janie Pauline Bell was born May 25, 1922 near Grinnell to Selva and Bertha Stufflebea(n) Johnson. She married Bonar Bell on Dec. 17, 1938. She was active in the Legion Auxiliary and had held offices both there and in the womens groups in the Christian church. She was president of the Mary Martha Missionary Circle of the Christian Church.

She is survived by her husband; one son, Steven Bell of Bloomfield; one daughter, Beverly Mincks of Ottumwa; three grandchildren; six brothers, Jason Johnson of Bloomfield, Olen Johnson of Grimes, Ervin Johnson of Mechanicsville, Lee, Kyle and Frank Johnson, all of Burlington; and one sister, Crystal Arnold of Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services were held March 12, 1971 at the Milton school h ouse with James D. McKean officiating. Interment ws in the Sunnyside Cemetery.
