ATKINS, HANEY, BOEGNER, CARPENTER

WORTH E. ATKINS

Worth Elmer Atkins, son of William E. and Clara Haney Atkins, was born February 2, 1898, South of Milton, Iowa. He grew to manhood there attending the country school of Union and then to the Milton High School. After which he attended the Ft. Madison Business College, graduating and starting to work for the Santa Fe Railroad at Chillicothe, Illinois, then transfered(sp) to Chicago. When the shops closed there he was sent to Ft. Madison, Iowa where he worked until he retired, as train dispatcher. He married Ruth Boegner in April 1923. She passed away February 9, 1972. One daughter, Mary Ann, was born to this union. He was a member of the Milton Christian Church. His death was unexpected as he had gone to the A.T. and Santa Fe Hospital at Topeka, Kansas for treatment and observation. He passed away at 2:30 Wed., Oct. 31, being at the hospital less than a week. He was preceeded in death by his wife, mother and father and two brothers. He leaves to mourn his death, his daughter, Mary Ann, a nurse in Chicago and one sister, Mrs. Naomi Carpenter of Milton and many nieces and nephews as well as a host of friends. He was a very talented person. He loved to paint and recently wrote a book on the founding of the City of Milton, especially the Holland addition. His funeral was held Saturday, November 3, at the Barr Memorial Chapel in Fort Madison, conducted by the Rev. Robert Rotgers, with burial in the Oakland Cemetery in Ft. Madison.
