Dr. John W. Saar dies in California Wednesday

Word was received here yesterday of the death of Dr. John W. Saar last Wednesday in Chino, California. He was found dead in the yard of a new home he had just purchased.

Dr. Saar practiced medicine a Keokuk from 1947 until the fall of 1975. During that time he built a huge practice and had countless loyal patients who showered him with gifts the last day his office was open in Keokuk. A kind and gentle man, Dr. Saar was always willing to give of himself for his patients, making night calls or working all afternoon on his regular afternoon off. A members of the Keokuk Rotary Club for several years, he resigned his membership because it took time away from his medical practice.

He attended Coe College and was graduated from the University of Iowa Medical School. he interuned at Salt Lake County General Hospital, Salt Lake City, Utah. During World War II, he spent six years in the U.S. Air Force as a flight surgeon, serving in England, France, and Belgium. He was discharged as a Major. Following the war he practiced for one year in Donnellson with his father before moving to Donnellson with his father moving to Keokuk.

The son of Dr. Jesse L. and Edna Miller Saar, he was born in Cantril, Iowa, February 18, 1915. He married Dorothy Rundquist in Cedar Rapids in 1942. He married Margaret Clark in Keokuk, in Feburary, 1966. He accepted a position in Chino as a physician at the state prison there, where he was employed at the time of his death.

He is survived by his mother, who also lives in California; one daughter Kristin Innocenti, Chicago, two brothers, Dr. Jesse Saar, Burlingotn, Ia; Dr. Richard Saar, California; one sister, Mrs. Betty Peterson, California. He was preceded in death by his father in February, 1976.

A cremation service was held in California. Memorials in his name to the Keokuk Area Hospital have been suggested. They may be sent to the hospital and will be used for the purchase of equipment.
