L. Edward "Eddie' Spees 1933-2017

L. Edward "Eddie' Spees, 84, of Birmingham, IA, passed away on September 27, 2017, at his home. He was born January 11, 1933, to William Guide and Lula Mae Fisher Spees in Birmingham, IA. He graduated from Birmingham High School in 1951. Eddie married Rita Kisling on October 25, 1959, at the Stockport Christian Church, they later divorced. He married Dolores “Dee” Dlouhy on February 8, 1969 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. They made their home together at the Spees Century Farm, where Eddie lived nearly his entire life.

Eddie was a farmer and spent his career working in agriculture. He volunteered much of his time for many different organizations including serving on the boards of the Van Buren County Hospital, TENCO Industries, Riverview Country Club, Birmingham Homecoming Committee, and the Birmingham Development Association. He was also a member of the Birmingham Lions Club and the Douds Saddle Club. Eddie had a love of horses and rodeos. He restored a surrey and drove a team of horses in countless parades and weddings over the years. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, attending their sporting events and activities whenever possible. Eddie left behind a legacy that will be remembered by his family and friends for many years to come.

He is survived by his wife Dee; four children, Rebecca (Patrick) Geraty of St. Louis, MO, William (Amy) Spees of Scandinavia, WI, Melissa (Matt) Smith of Keosauqua, IA, Michael Spees of Ottumwa, IA; five grandchildren, Powers, Morgen, Jacob, Jessie, Cala; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Coyner Spees; and two sisters, Julia Neuhart and Reba Mae Vogel.

Funeral services were held October 2, 2017, at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua with Pastor Larry Smith and Larry Shipley officiating. Burial followed the service at Maple Hill Cemetery in Birmingham, IA.
