Juanita L. Johnson, 94, of Burlington, died April 28, 2017, at the Blair House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.

Born October 20, 1922, in Farmington, IA, she was the daughter of Volney and Goldie Rider Therme. On March 27, 1947, she married John Lindsey Johnson in Fort Madison. He later passed on April 8, 2014.

She was the youngest of four children; she had two older brothers and one older sister. Juanita went to school in Farmington and in her high school years she played basketball for the school. In her senior year her team went to state. Juanita graduated in 1941 from Farmington High School. Juanita and John married after he returned from WWII, serving as a sergeant in the Marine Corps. They had two daughters, Brenda and Candice. They have given Juanita six grandchildren and nine great-grandkids. Juanita and her husband had been married 60 years before he passed away.

Juanita worked at several different places in her life. She worked at Shaeffer Pen during WWII, and after at Montgomery Wards, Sylvania and Winegard. She then retired from JC Penney's after 20 years of service in 1987.

Juanita and her family enjoyed camping. Besides camping, Juanita liked to make quilts, tole paint, cross-stitch, and put together puzzles with her husband. She was also a very active member of the First Christian Church. Her family liked to gather at her home for holiday and birthday meals because she was a very good cook. Juanita called the Blair House her home for eight years. Her advice to the younger generation is to work hard at whatever you do.

Survivors include two daughters, Candy Balzer of West Burlington, Brenda (Chris) Williams of Burlington; five grandchildren, Phillip (Marcia) Dickman, Timothy (Trisha) Dickman, Angela Runnells, Steven (Tammy) Dickman, and Jennifer (Brad) Hoenig, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by two brothers, Manford and David Therme; one sister, Verna Johnson; and one grandson, Zach Balzer.

A graveside service for John and Juanita Johnson was held August 19, 2017, Greenglade Cemetery in Farmington.
