Eugene Lee Cone 1921-2017

Eugene Lee Cone, 95, of Iowa City, IA, and formerly of Milton, IA, passed away on March 9, 2017, at the Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City.

He was born June 17, 1921, in rural Scotland County, MO, to Orin Lee and Ruby Viola (Barton) Cone.

Eugene grew up on a farm in Scotland County and attended Cone School. He entered the United States Army in June of 1942 and was honorably discharged in September of 1945.

He married Anna Ruth Grim on October 6, 1945, in Scotland County, MO. They lived, raised three children and farmed south of Milton, IA, from 1946 until he moved to Iowa City.

Eugene enjoyed his life, especially being outdoors on his farm. He was recognized as an excellent farmer and caretaker of the land. He spent a lot of time on his tractor and his four-wheeler and loved working in his garden; enjoyed fishing and hunting as well as woodworking. He was well liked and respected by people of all ages and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was a member of the Russell Strait Post #483 American Legion in Milton, IA.

Eugene is survived by his children: Pamela Humble of Hamilton, IL; Richard Cone of North Liberty, IA, and Pat Cone-Fisher (Scott) of Iowa City, IA. Also surviving are his six grandchildren: Kimberly Lacey, Kevin Humble, Abby Cone, Emmy Cone, Matthew Fisher and Michael Fisher; three step-grandchildren: Sherri Angell, Molly Fry, Brent Angell; nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ann, and sister, Mary Alyce Martin.

Eugene's family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Briarwood Health Care Center of Iowa City and Essence of Life Hospice for their outstanding kindness and care.

Services were held at Memphis Funeral Home in Memphis, MO, on March 14, with Brother Larry Smith officiating. Music will be provided by Joe Fulk and Ann Luther. Burial followed in Sunnyside Cemetery at Milton, IA. Casket bearers will be Matthew Fisher, Curtis Huff, Michael Fisher, Joshua Lacey, Jordan Lacey and Curtis Short. Military rites will be accorded by the Russell Strait Post #483 American Legion.

Arrangements were under the direction Of Memphis Funeral Home.
