EUGENIA WOODS SNODGRASS

Eugenia Woods, daughter of Robert and Mary DeHart Woods, was born on Feb. 4, 1871, at the farm hom in Vernon township where she grew to womanhood. She attended school and Sunday school at the Ward school house, later transferring her church attendance to Story Chapel. She was the second child in a family of six, one of whom, Paul Woods, survives. Her mother died when Eugenia was twelve years old, and the burden of caring for the household and family fell heavily on her young shoulders, a duty which was faithfully performed.

Soon after the turn of the century, the family being grown and having gone into homes of their own, she with her father removed to the homestead of her grandfather Woods, five miles northwest of Bonaparte, where she remained and cared for her father until his death in 1924. In Sept. 1930, Eugenia was united in marriage at Chariton, Iowa, with Eugene Snodgrass, who passed away after eight happy years, after which "Genie," as she was familiarly known to her many friends, lived alone until her health began to fail, and she found it necessary to leave the farm, and retire to Bonaparte. About a year ago, her health became steadily worse, and she was taken to the home of a cousin, Earle Davis, where she was tenderly cared for by Earle and Rosa, but in spite of all that loving hands could do, she slipped into rest soon after noon on Mother's Day, May 8, 1949.

From her pioneer ancestors Eugenia inherited the qualities of self-reliance and industry, kindness and consideration for others. She was decided in her preferences, but always chose to do that which she thought was right. Her chief interest was in her home and her circle of friends, by whom she will be greatly missed.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, May 11, in the Presbyterian church, Bonaparte, Rev. H. Dalyrymple of Keosauqua presiding. Music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Keith Gaston. The pallbearers were Clinton Huff, Jr., George Rigler, Richard McCracken, Harold Pratt, Andy Williams and Larry Pickard. Burial in Bonaparte cemetery.
