Burlington man, daughter die in crash

By JEFF YOUNG
STOCKPORT - A Burlington man and his daughter were killed Tuesday afternoon after a one-vehicle accident four miles southeast of Stockport on Highway 16.

Tony Lee Doud, 37, and his daughter, Samorya, 9, were eastbound in his 1984 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer when it struck a concrete bridge abutment 1 1/2 miles east of Stockport junction on Highway 16.

Doud, a 1970 graduate of Van Buren Community High School in Keosauqua and his daughter had been visiting relatives in the area over the weekend and were returning to Burlington when the accident occurred. He was the son of Ralph and Maria Doud of Keosauqua.

Van Buren County Sheriff Hugh Hardin said there were no witnesses to the accident and there wer no skid marks on the highway.

The accident occurred at approximately noon and Hardin's office was notified at 12:04 p.m. by a motorist who came upon the scene. The Stockport Fire Department was dispatched to the scene, along with Stockport First Responders. Calls went out to the Keosauqua and Fairfield Fire Departments for the Jaws of Life equipment.

The Fairfield Fire Department responded at 12:24 p.m. and an Air Care helicopter from University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics was dispatched at 12:34 p.m.

Rescue workers were to removed the girl soon after arriving but the twisted wreckage hampered efforts to remove her father for nearly 45 minutes. The force of the impact knocked out the windshield and sheered off the truck's passenger door sending it into the ditch.

Two teams of doctors and nurses from Van Buren County Memorial Hospital were working on the victims in separate ambulances at the scene. The first Air Care helicopter set down just 50 yards from the accident site at 1:25 p.m. and 20 minutes later was back in the air heading toward Iowa City with the girl.

The second Air Care helicopter took off from Waterloo, refueled at Oakdale and arrived at the scene at 1:53 p.m. Doud died in the ambulance at 2:04 p.m. and his daughter died at University Hospitals at 3:32 p.m.

The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the accident and no cause has been determined. Both victims were wearing seat belts.

Funeral arrangements are with the Lunning Chapel in Burlington. Survivors include Doud's wife Rhonda.
