Hillsboro couple found dead

HILLSBORO - Charles Bertram Bennett, 44, and his wife Barbara Joyce Bennett, 39, of Hillsboro, were found shot in the dining room of their home Wednesday, March 14. Authorities received a telephone call that there was a domestic problem at 2:30 a.m.

Henry County Sheriff Terry E. Morrow reported that Barbara was shot three time in the head and once in the chest from a 22 caliber revolver. She was dead at the scene. Charles died of a self inflicted single shot to the head at the Henry County Health Center shortly after he was taken there.

Morrow said a third person was at the house but left to call authorities. Morrow declined to identify that person.

The autopsies were performed by Dr. Klupfer at the Ottumwa Hospital.

Barbara Bennett was a production worker at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant at Middletown for 16 years.

Her body was taken to the Beatty Funeral Home, Mount Pleasant, where the service was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial was in the Rose Hill cemetery, Buffalo.

The funeral for Charles Bennett was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hamilton Southtown Funeral Home at Des Moines.

The Henry County Sheriff's Department, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Henry County Attorney's office investigated the deaths.
