Kaiser Honored
RESIDENT OF THE MONTH

Herman Kaiser was honored as April's "resident of the month" at the Memphis Care Facility.

Herman is the brother of Walt Kaiser of Milton and Henry Kaiser of Cantril.

The following item is taken from the April 28, 1983, edition of the Memphis Democrat, Memphis, Mo.

Our April resident of the month is Herman Kaiser. Herman is the son of William and Anna Kaiser, both of whom were natives of Germany. Herman was born on May 10, 1899 in Havannah, Ill. He has a brother, Henry, who also lives here at the nursing home. Herman attended a country school in Sedora, Ill., "But we sure got smart there, even if it was a country school!" Herman said.

Herman moved from Havannah to Cantril, Iowa, early in his twenties. He met and married Olive Robertson in 1923. They had five children, three of whom live in the Iowa-Missouri area. Herman has been a farmer most of his life, and he recalls the time when he used horses and mules to do the work that tractors now do; "I had three different wagons; two I used for hauling grain during the harvest season. They had what we called "boxes" on them to support the load. The third was just a flat bedded wagon, used mostly for going places in. Of course, when tractors came along, I sold most of my horses, and bought a tractor! But, I did keep a few of the horses, and used to take them on the local trail rides ever so often."

Among his favorite hobbies were, of course his horses, and hunting. "I hunted rabbits. Never hunted deer, they ran too fast!" When it was pointed out to him that rabbits run fast too, Herman chuckled and said, "I wondered if you would catch that one!" Nowadays, Herman especially likes the musical groups that come to entertain us. He enjoys listening to the radio, and watching TV. He and his brother Henry share a room and often sit and talk with the other men at mealtime.
