Ronald Harward is Killed In Auto Crash

A 17 year old boy, Ronald Harward, of Cantril, was killed in a car-truck crash at the junction of Iowa 103 and US 218 six miles north of Donnellson at 7:55 P.M. Monday, May 6.

The Harward boy died of head and other injuries in Sacred Heart Hospital, Ft. Madison, according to Lee County officers.

Harward was a passenger in a car driven by James L. Kindle, 16, of Cantril. Another passenger was Billy Perkins, 14, also of Cantril.

Kindle and Perkins were both listed in fair condition in Sacred Heart Hospital, Tuesday morning. Kindle has a chipped pelvis, lung damage, cuts and bruises, and Perkins had cuts and bruises and a possible fracture elbow.

Walter Caldwell, 42, of rural Keokuk, driver of the semi-trailer truck, suffered minor cuts and bruises and told officers he would see his physician.

According to a highway patrol report, the Kindle car failed to stop at a stop sign and was hit broadside by the truck which was loaded with coal. The truck went into a ditch at the northwest corner of the intersection and the car into a ditch at the northeast corner.

Harward and Kindle were thrown from the auto onto the pavement.
