In order to help find your family more information about your sources may be useful.
What is the basis for the information that you have? Newspaper clippings of an obituary? Family tradition? Probate? Other?

Each source probably needs to be evaluated for quality of evidence. For instance during this time in American history many orphans were placed in the midwest.

Another approach would be to exhaustively study the Merrill family as it is possible there is some association back in time between the families.
