Silas Walter Mateer

Walter Mateer was born in Union county, Iowa Oct 20, 1882, a son of Henry Mateer and Angeline Holt Mateer. He had always lived in or near Afton before coming to Red Oak Nov 1, 1931, where he had since lived. He followed the occupation of laborer during his lifetime.

Mr. Mateer was married Nov. 31, 1905 to Bertha Goosman of Creston and three children survive this marriage. They are Mrs Irene Wollaib and Mrs Ada Cole both of Afton and Ch. Ph. M. Robert Mateer, taking part in the invasion overseas.

A second marriage took place in Maryville, Mo on April 12, 1931, when he ws married to Nora Zuber, who with their son Dale Mateer, survives him. Three Sister and two brothers also survive; Art Mateer of Osceola, John Henry Mateer of Afton, Lottie Elliott, Bessie Nye and Florence Gripp.

Mr Mateer was member of the Evangelical church of Afton.

Walter Mateer, 61, died suddenly at his home, 602 Boundary St. Tuesday, June 20 at 9 am; death was caused by a heart attack.
Funeral services will be held this Thursday afternoon at 2 PM at the Perryman chapel with Dr. Guy J Fansher in charge. Pallbearers will be Thomas Wright, Harry Malony, Floyd Billings, John Crofts, Harry Turner and Merrill Olson. Music will be by Mrs. Mark McLarnan and Miss May Malmburg. with Mrs Ray Cozad at the organ. Mrs Merrill Olson and Francis Loeltz will have charge of the flowers. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak, Iowa.
