OBITUARY

Thomas J. Eness was born at Eness, Norway, April 4, 1844. He left Norway in 1866 and upon his arrival in this country settled at Calamus, Iowa, where he lived for about ten years. On the 28th day of March, 1874, he married Engeborg Peterson. He moved from Calamus to Gilbert, Iowa, residing near that place for eight years and then moved to Pierson, Woodbury county, Iowa, in March of the year 1884. Mr. Eness took up a homestead near that town and after a residence of about ten years he again moved to Gilbert, Iowa, where he spent the next fifteen years, at the end of which time he retired from farming and removed to Story City in 1909. Mr. Eness made his home in Story City until his death April 4th, 1924, his eightieth birthday. Death occurred after several months of failing health.

Mr. Eness was a man of powerful physique, never having known any illness until the time of his death. He was a man of the highest moral character, possessed a deeply generous giver and a friend to every one. Thomas Eness can be remembered as a staunch friend, a loyal supported of the right, and as the possessor of an over whelming trust in human nature. He leaves his wife and three children to mourn the death of a good husband and a wonderful father. His children, Louis T. Eness of Ames, Martha Gildersleeve of Ames, Jacob T. Eness of Gilbert, were with him most of the time during the last five weeks before death's arrival. Mr. Eness leaves nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. None of his brothers and sisters remain, having already been removed by death.

Services were held by Rev. Heimarck in the Immanuel church at Story City and remains were laid to rest in South St. Petri cemetery.
