Tragic Death of Dr. A. L. Born Story City Resident

Story City, Oct. 18--Story City residents are today slowly recovering from the shock occasioned late Saturday afternoon, when they learned of the sudden death of Dr. A. L. Born, 56, well known and native born veterinarian, which occurred late Saturday afternoon on a farm he owns south of Story City.

Dr. Born had gone alone to the farm know as the old Mike Erickson place, which he recently purchased and operated, with H. A. Horness in charge.

He had taken his gun, expecting to hunt squirrels, after vaccinating a bunch of hogs on the farm for the flu.

An hour afterward his mangled body was found in the hog lot by Charles Horness, 12-year-old son of the tenant.

Examination of a physician called at once showed he had evidently toppled over while at work, from a heart attack, to which he was subject. Before the dead body was found it had been disfigured almost beyond recognition by the hogs.

Dr. Born was born on the old Jacob Born homestead south of Story City, a mile from the farm on which he met his tragic death. Graduating from the College of Veterinary Surgery at Iowa State College, Ames, he had practiced in Story City for nearly thirty years. With the exception of about 3 years spent in Omaha, he had lived in this community his entire lifetime.

His wife was Betsey Halleland, Story City woman, and he is survived by this wife; a daughter, Mrs. John J. Adams of Fort Polk, La, who is now in a hospital at Mason City, where a daughter, Sally was born on Thursday, and another granddaughter, Julia.

He also leaves brothers Jay of Story City, Fred of California and Bert of Canby, Minn.; and sisters Mrs. Kate Owens of Minneapolis, Minn. and Mrs. Myrtle Carnes of Milford, Iowa.

Funeral rites will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Adams Funeral home in Story City, with Rev. S. T. Nelson in charge. Burial will be in the Story City cemetery.

Dr. Born was a man widely known and of very high repute in the community in which he had spent his entire busy life.
