OTTO TJERNAGEL

STORY CITY--Funeral service for Otto Tjernagel were held Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 30 at 2:00 p. m. at Lake Mills Synod Lutheran church. The Rev. Gerhard Becker officiated and burial was in the Synod cemetery.

Life Sketch

Otto Alfred Tjernagel was born July 7, 1896 at Follinglo Farm, Story City, to Peter G. and Johanna Tjernagel. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith at Duncombe, Iowa by the Rev. S. S. Gramstad. He was confirmed by the Rev. O. P. Vangness in 1910 at the North St. Petri Lutheran church, Story City.

Mr. Tjernagel received his elementary education in the public school. He studied violin at the University, Madison, Wis. He was a member of the Follinglo orchestra. Most of his youth was spent on the home farm.

On March 28, 1935 he was united in marriage to Amanda Huso. To them were born four children, a son preceding him in death, who died in infancy.

Tjernagel was employed at the Hegland Produce and the Ames Hatchery, Story City for several years. In 19-- he moved with his family to the Andrew Anderson farm near Lake Mills where he farmed for four years. Later he was employed by the Tom Shawhan implement and the Co-op Oil Company until he started his own ---- Service bulk station in January of 1952.

In August 1954 he became a victim of heart disease and in April of the following year was forced to sell his business. During the last two years of his retirement he has been in the furniture upholstery and repair business.

Mr. Tjernagel was a member of the Lake Mills Synod Lutheran church.

He entered Maeve Hospital, Albert Lea, on Thursday for observation and treatment and died about noon the following Saturday, Sept. 27.

Surviving are his wife; three children, Mrs. Robert (Mildred) Nickson, Lake Mills, Seven of Story City and Mrs. Norman (Amanda) Madson, Trail, Minn.; four grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Jennie Tjernagel of Story City and seven brothers and sisters.

Attening the funeral were Miss Bertha Tjernagel, M. O. Tjernagel, Herman Tjernabel, Mr. and Mrs. Seven Tjernagel and Stevie, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Tjernagel and Paul, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Tjernagel, Mrs. Paul Dornack, Mrs. John Hall, Mrs. Joe Hall, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Braland and Oscar Braland.
