In Response To: National History Day (Lydia Vander Werff)

Lydia: Nice to hear of your interest in early Sioux County Iowa history.
There is quite a bit of information out there on that switch of the county seat from Calliope/Hawarden to Orange City.

For newspaper history try:
http://siouxcounty.advantage-preservation.com/
in the search line use general terms such as
(exact) court house, County seat, Calliope,
in the year bracket put 01/01/1870 - 01/01/1873 and it will come up with the hits for those words.

There were not many papers back then and I think the only one to survive was the Sioux County Herald from 1872 - on.

There are some county history books to reference such as The Story of Sioux County by Charles Dyke, Siouxland a Story of Sioux County by Nelson Nieuwenhuis, the Hawarden Centennial book, A samll book on Calliope. These books can all be found in our genealogy section of the Sioux Center Library.
I am not around until after about Dec 8th and most of the time there is someone in that department on Wednesday afternoons but it is open to the public at all library hours.

Please contact me at above email if you have further questions.
