Gerrit Alons, 92, of Hull died Monday, January 3, at Good Samaritan Center in George.
Memorial services were at 10 a.m. Friday at American Reformed Church in Hull with the Rev. Steve Bierly officiating. Burial was in Sheridan Township Cemetery, rural Boyden.
Alons was born July 5, 1912, on a farm near Hospers, the son of Daniel and Mary (Fedders) Alons. He was raised near Hospers, where he attended the Christian school. As a young adult, he worked as a hired man for several farmers. On November 4, 1936, he married Hattie Tensen at his parents' home near Hospers. They farmed near Hospers.until 1941, when they moved to a farm near Boyden. In 1976, they retired into Boyden. They moved to the Colony House in Hull in March of 2002. In June of 2004, they became residents of the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull. He moved to the Good Samaritan Center in November
of2004.
He was a member of the American Reformed Church in Hull. He was formerly a member of the First Reformed Church in Boyden, where he served on the consistory and taught Sunday school and catechism classes. He became more dedicated to Jesus Christ during Key '73, a lay witness event held at the church. He also served on the school board and several farm-related boards and helped with extension fund-raising.
He enjoyed woodworking and was the carpenter on the two houses he and his wife built in Boyden.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years; a son and his wife, Dwayne and Clarice Alons; and two daughters and their husbands, Marcia and Bob Mantel and Glenda and John De Koster, all of Hull; nine grandchildren; 16 greatgrandchildren;
and a sister-in-law, Maggie Alons of Sanborn.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ben and Louis Alons; and three sisters, Reka Alons, Grace Schmidt and Elsie Tamminga.
Memorials may be directed to the American Reformed Church building fund or the Gideons.
