Dennis Floyd was born on March 31, 1947, in Cherokee, the oldest child of four children born to Floyd Vernon and Evelyn Marcella (Dyslin) Sassman. His early years were spent in Storm Lake and Alta, until his family moved to an acreage near Rembrandt when he was in the sixth grade. He proudly graduated from the Rembrandt High School, in a class of sixteen people. Denny continued his education at the Nebraska Christian College, where he met his soul mate, Connie Rupp, and they were married on June 1, 1968.
Following his graduation in 1969, Dennis and Connie moved to Eldora, where he worked at the Iowa Training School for Boys. While living in Eldora, their two children, Sheila and David, were born. The family moved to Orange City in 1979, where Denny became the Sioux County Human Services Director. Through the years, he earned the title of Area Administrator for Human Services for fourteen counties, including Sioux, Plymouth, Lyon, and Cherokee. In 1999, he retired from the state of Iowa and worked for fourteen years for Hope Haven. Dennis always wanted to work with and serve people, and God gave him a wonderful, rewarding career.
Denny was an outdoorsman. He spent many hours on the water fishing and making wonderful friends and memories. He also loved Iowa deer hunting, but in later years came to love his Colorado deer hunts with his son, David.
Survivors include his wife of more than 58 years, Connie, of Orange City; his daughter and her husband, Sheila and Bob Hofer, of Craig, Nebraska; his son and his wife, David and Tina Sassman, of Orange City; four grandchildren, Keaton Alexander Johnsen, of St. Paul, Minnesota; Mackenzie Danielle, and her husband, Drew Merrill, of Stanton, Nebraska; Chase Gordon Sassman, and Emma Grace Sassman, and her fiancé, Caiden Moss, all of Orange City; two great-grandchildren, Sabrina and Nova Merrill; and a sister, Joni McDonnell, of Kingman, Arizona.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Lonnie Sassman and Roger Sassman.
Memorials will be given to Cookson Hills Christian School in Kansas, Oklahoma.
