Ervin was the son of Teunis and Rena (Jasper) Huizenga. He was raised in Orange City, attended the Orange City Christian School, and graduated from the Northwestern Classical Academy in 1955.

On February 26, 1960, he was united in marriage to Eva Jeane Ver Steeg at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. They made their home in Orange City, where they raised their family. For many years, Ike owned and operated Huizenga Transportation, and continued trucking until the age of 81. Eva passed away on April 3, 2022, after more than 62 years of marriage. Shortly thereafter, Ike moved to the Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen, and the following year, became a resident of the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City, where he passed away.

Ike was a charter member of the Immanuel Christian Reformed Church in Orange City and a former member of the First Christian Reformed Church. In earlier years, he and Eva liked to go bowling, and enjoyed taking their family camping, particularly to Okoboji. Ike was known for his quick wit, lively personality, and love of visiting with others. With a voice that carried and a story always ready to share, he had a way of filling a room and keeping those around him entertained.
