Mr. Franklin “Frank” Vogel, age 98, of Orange City, passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

A visitation with the family present will be held on Monday, June 8, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. A prayer service will take place on Tuesday, June 9, at 9:30am, at the church, followed by interment at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a memorial service on Tuesday, at 11:00am, at the church with the Rev. John Klompien and the Rev. John Tock officiating. The Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is in charge of arrangements.

Frank was born in Orange City, on September 12, 1927, the fourth of eight children born to Andrew and Jennie (Reinders) Vogel. He grew up in Orange City and was a student at the Orange City Christian School and Western Christian High School in Hull. From an early age, Frank was a creative entrepreneur, operating his own popcorn stand and offering concessions at the local skating rink, as well as helping around his father’s Orange Brand Paint business. At the age of seventeen, with the consent of his parents, Frank enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as a cook on a minesweeper in the Pacific Ocean.

At the end of the war, Frank returned to Orange City and he and his brothers began working for their father at the “Old Factory”. He also met a young Maurice woman by the name of Lois Boonstra, and they were united in marriage on October 1, 1948. Together, he and Lois made their home in Orange City where they raised their family and Frank continued his work at the paint plant. One of his initial tasks was to construct a new facility, which was home to Vogel Paint and Wax until being destroyed by a fire in 1964. The following year, a new and larger paint plant was built on the south edge of Orange City. In 1967, following the acquisition of Diamond Products, the company would become known as Diamond Vogel Paints. Frank served as president, and later chairman, of the company until “retiring” in 1988. That same year, under Frank’s leadership, the Vogel Family purchased the Sioux County State Bank in Orange City, and shortly after, the Iowa State Bank in Hull, and together they became known as Iowa State Bank. Frank remained active in banking well into his nineties, growing the business to include fourteen locations in Northwest Iowa. Frank was not only an accomplished businessman but a loving husband and father who cared for his wife as her health declined. Lois passed away on October 9, 2012, in Orange City, after more than 64 years of marriage. Three years later, Frank moved into the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City, and in 2022, following a stroke, he became a resident of the Prairie Ridge Care Center.

Mr. Vogel was a lifelong member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City, where he had served as a deacon and elder, and taught Sunday school and catechism classes. He was an avid supporter of numerous missions, including the Luke Society, and of Christian education, serving on the Orange City Christian School board and as part of the Board of Trustees at Northwestern College in Orange City. He was a proud member of the Pressman-Koster American Legion in Orange City for more than 75 years, and had served in numerous leadership positions through the community, as well as various organizations and boards associated with his business interests.

Despite all of his accomplishments, Frank’s true joy in life was his family. He and Lois were able to travel together and spent numerous winters in Mesa, Arizona. They looked forward to spending time with their children and grandchildren on family vacations and at their home on East Lake Okoboji. Those that knew Frank best will remember his generous nature, valuable words of wisdom, and wonderful sense of humor.

He will be deeply missed by his four children and their spouses, Drew and Jean Vogel, of Orange City; Blair and Suzanne Vogel, of Omaha, Nebraska; Wrede and Barb Vogel, of Orange City; and Jane and Renee Vogel, of Mesa, Arizona; twelve grandchildren, Meika Vogel, Trevor Vogel, Tyler (Karrie) Vogel, Ian Vogel, Amy (Kenny) Fares, Mia Nelson, Ali (Arron) Goepfert, Erika (Matthew) Brossard, Anne Kooiman, Chris (Jessica) Vogel, Michael (Catherine) Van Der Weide, and Drew (Samantha) Van Der Weide; a granddaughter-in-law Julia Faidi; 24 great-grandchildren; a brother, Arthur Vogel; a brother-in-law, Roger Roghair; and a sister-in-law, Mary Mouw, all of Orange City; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Maximillian Faidi; a grandson-in-law, Scott Kooiman; three sisters, Mary Vogel (in infancy); Bertha, and her husband, Patrick Stephenson; and Margaret Roghair; three brothers and their wives, George and Joyce Vogel, John and Doris Vogel, and Marvin and Joy Vogel; a sister-in-law, Shirley Vogel; and four brothers-in-law, Harold Boonstra, and his wife, Ann; Bob Boonstra, and his wife, Myrna; Norm Boonstra, and his wife, Velma; and Rudy Boonstra.

Memorials will be given to the Luke Society, Northwestern College in Orange City, and the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City.
