Mr. Fred Krommendyk, age 80, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, May 4, 2026, at the Orange City Area Health System.

A visitation with the family present will be held on Wednesday, May 20, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. A prayer service will take place on Thursday, May 21, at 1:00pm, at the funeral home, followed by interment at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a memorial service on Thursday, at 2:00pm, at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City with the Rev. John Klompien and the Rev. Aldon Kuiper officiating.

Frederick was born on January 20, 1946, in Hull, the son of Frederik and Della (Dykstra) Krommendyk. He was raised in Hull where he attended the Hull Christian School and graduated from Western Christian High School. He then furthered his education at Dordt College in Sioux Center, and at Iowa State University in Ames.

On October 3, 1966, he was united in marriage to Elma Jane Den Hartog in Orange City. They made their home in several communities until 1971, when they settled in Orange City. For several years Fred owned and operated the Hayloft Café in Orange City before accepting a position at Silent Drive in Orange City. He later worked at Link Manufacturing in Sioux Center until his retirement, when he started helping part-time at Oolman Funeral Homes. Jane passed away on July 10, 2017, in Orange City, after more than fifty years of marriage.

Fred was a member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City, where he served as a deacon and elder. He also served as a member of the school board for Unity Christian High School in Orange City, and for many years on the Tulip Festival Steering Committee. As part of the steering committee, Fred oversaw the city’s parade floats and helped design and build several new ones, some of which are still in use today. In 1986, he served as chairman of the committee and was honored as the Tulip Festival Grand Marshal. Together, he and Jane were charter members of the Dutch Heritage Boosters. He enjoyed singing as part of a quartet, and researching family genealogy, creating family trees for his family as well as each of his daughter-in-law’s families. Later in life he spent many days golfing and looking forward to attending his grandchildren’s athletic and music events whenever possible. His gentle and kind spirit was admired by all who he came into contact with. He was adored by his grandchildren, children, and lifelong friends to whom he gave an amazing Christ like example of how to treat people and how to live.

Survivors include his four children, Michael Krommendyk, and his wife, Lisa (Dorhout), and Robert Krommendyk, and his wife, Diane (Alsum), all of Orange City; Patrick Krommendyk, and his wife, Julie (Vanderploeg), of Hamburg, Minnesota; and Shannon Krommendyk, of Orange City; twelve grandchildren, Kaira Krommendyk; Raegan Krommendyk; Sydney, and her husband, Alec Flanscha; Noah Krommendyk, and his wife, Hannah (Jansma); Chloe Krommendyk, and her fiancé, Payton Marquardt; Isaac Krommendyk; Ally, and her husband, Tanner Hulstein; Brenna Krommendyk; Bennett Krommendyk, and his wife, Lourdes (Mulcrone); Tyler Krommendyk; Micah Krommendyk; and Jake Krommendyk; two great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Dennis Den Hartog, and his wife, Sherry (Roetman), and Daryl Beltman, all of Orange City; and three sisters-in-law, Marcia Arends; Becky, and her husband, Curt Vogel; and Donna Den Hartog, all of Orange City.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kimberly Krommendyk; three brothers and a sister, along with their spouses, Bernard “Bud” and Luella (Smit) Krommendyk; Williard “Will” and Sophie (Looyenga) Krommendyk; Harriet and Roger Sikma; and Berwyn “Ber” and Hilda (Lems) Krommendyk; a sister-in-law, Shirley (Den Hartog) Beltman; and a brother-in-law, Terry Arends.

Memorials will be given to the Okoboji Bible Conference and Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice.
