Verne William was born on October 17, 1927, in Orange City, the son of Andrew and Rena (Kroeze) Huisman. He was raised on his family’s farm northwest of Orange City and attended country school.

On August 15, 1948, he was united in marriage to Fayola Berdell Mouw, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center. He treasured the fact that they were the fourth generation to make their home on the Huisman Family Farm. Faye passed away on September 4, 2014, in Hull, after more than 66 years of marriage.

Mr. Huisman was a member of the Christian Reformed denomination and was a supporter of Christian education. He had served on First Christian Reformed Church consistory, the Sioux Center Mutual Telephone Board of Directors, and as the Holland Township Trustee. As a young man he earned his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying. He also liked to play golf; go hunting, bowling, and horseback riding; play horseshoes and snooker; and listen to music and sing. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom agree that he was the best at “catch toes”; and attending their various extracurricular activities.

Survivors include his three children, Valerie Van Schepen, of Hull; Gene Huisman, of Rock Valley; and Gail, and her husband, Bryan De Jong, of Waukee; a daughter-in-law, Ella Kaye Huisman Vander Schaaf, of Orange City; eleven grandchildren, Kevin Van Schepen, and his wife, Sherry; Angela, and her husband, Mike Broek; Melanie, and her husband, Matthew Vande Hoef; Brianna, and her husband, Matthew Roetman; Justin Van Schepen, and his wife, Sheila; Brittany, and her husband, Travis Veldman; Jessica Huisman; Liza, and her husband, Jeff Schouten; Wade Huisman, and his wife, Angie; Benjamen De Jong, and his wife, Emily; and Lindsey De Jong; 37 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Esther, and her husband, Rodney De Haan, of Florida; Ruth Boone, of Sioux Center; and Eleanor Van Grouw, of Orange City; and a brother, Alan Huisman, of New Hampshire.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, Jan Huisman and Wesley Huisman; a son-in-law, Bruce Van Schepen; a sister and her husband, Helena and Almon Brandt; and two brothers-in-law, Vernon Boone and Eugene Van Grouw.

Memorials may be directed to Kindred Hospice in Spirit Lake.
