Research note: From a family report on ancestry.com (by others) Mathea Ingebretsdatter Holter was born 26 August 1847 Varkkero Oslo Norway died 8 March 1884 Union County SD her parents were Ingebret Larson 1811-1884 and Kari Olsdatter 1806-1882. She married Jeremiah Roswell Thornton born Jan 1847 Schroon, Essex New York. Died 14 March 1922 at Algonoa IA. Children William, Martin, Ida, Carrie and Emma.

Obituary:
Died on Saturday evening, March 8th 1884 of consumption, Mrs. Mattie Thornton, wife of Jerry Thornton, of Virginia Township.
Mrs. Thornton was born in Christiana, Norway, Aug 26, 1848 and came to this country about fifteen years ago. Being on of the early settlers of Dakoka, she passed through the trials known only to those who were compelled to endure them. All the difficulties that lay in her path she met with heroic courage and Christian fortitude. Her matronly virtues won her many friends in the community. followed by her attributes. …….. The large number of friends that attended the funeral service was an eloquent tribute to her memory.
