From the Sioux Center News, May 12, 1938:

Obituary of Jake Schaap

Hull--Special--Mr. Jake Schaap, son of C. J. Schaap, was born on Jan. 21, 1886 in Ackley, Butler County, Iowa and died May 8th, 1938 at his father's home.

When he was ten years old he fell on the ice, injuring his spine so that he was crippled for the remainder of his life. His condition gradually became worse. He died of heart trouble.

He leaves to mourn his father, two brothers and four sisters, namely, John Schaap of Sioux Falls, Mrs. W. Van Dyk, Hull; Mary at home; Mrs. De Kruif of Sheldon, Mrs. P. Niesink of Sioux Center, Cornie of Doon. His mother preceded him in death in 1921 and a sister, Minnie, in 1904. Funeral services were held Wed. from the Chr. Ref. church, Rev. Haan officiating. Jake bore his suffering patiently and was ready to be called away.

RESEARCH NOTES

A nearly identical obituary to that in the Sioux Center News was published in the Alton Democrat (May 13). It adds that he came to Sioux County in 1901, and gives the names of two of his married sisters as Cora, Mrs. De Kruif and Anna, Mrs. P. Niessink.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has him as Schaap, Jacob, born 21 Jan 1886, died 8 May 1938, Brother of C. J., Hope Cemetery, Hull IA.

His death certificate gives his parents as Cornelius J. Schaap and Katie Roos, both born in Holland; always a cripple, no trade; died in Hull at 7:00 p.m. May 8, 1938; cause, myocarditis; contributory cause, invalid all his life.

He registered for the World War I draft (Sept. 1918) as Jacob C. Schaap, age 32, Hull, Iowa, can’t work/cripple, nearest relative C. J. Schaap, father; medium height, slender build, blue eyes, light hair; “registrant physically disqualified.”

None of the U.S. censuses show him with an occupation.
