DEATH CLAIMS AGED CITIZEN
P. J. Conway Passed Away in Sioux City Wednesday
Was 77 Years Old and for the Past Two Years Lived Here With His Son, Rev. Fr. C. P. Conway

P. J. Conway of Hawarden passed away Wednesday at St. Joseph’s hospital in Sioux City following an operation to which he submitted Sunday. Mr. Conway had been ill at the home of his son, Rev. Fr. C. P. Conway in this city for two weeks, and was taken to Sioux City in an ambulance Saturday and the operation was performed Sunday but he was unable to overcome the ordeal.

Funeral services will be held at 10 o’clock Saturday morning in Blessed Sacrament Catholic church in Sioux City. Rev. Fr. Newman Flanagan will officiate.

Philip Joseph Conway was born in La Salle, Ill., Aug. 4, 1856, and so had just passed his 77th birthday. He moved with his family in 1878 to Grundy county, Ill., and in 1882 the family moved to Sioux County and eight years later he moved to Remsen. In 1883 he was united in marriage with Miss Katherine Meagher at Kinsman, Ill. Mr. Conway and his family moved to Sioux City in 1902 where he resided for 23 years when he moved to Milwaukee. Two years ago he came to Hawarden and since that time has made his home here with his son.

He is survived by his widow; three sons, Rev. Fr. C. P. Conway of Hawarden; W. Emmet of Rochester, N.Y.; and Edmund F. of Chicago; three daughters, Sister Marian, O.S.D., of Cheyenne, Wyo., Mrs. Arthur Bragher of Albuquerque, N.M., and Mrs. Martin J. Ryan of Sioux City; a brother, Rev. Fr. P. C. Conway of Chicago; two sisters, Sister Maria of Emmitsburg, Md., and Sister Roberta of Green Bay, Wis., and one grandson, Conway Ryan of Sioux City.

Mr. Conway was a member of Epiphany council, No. 743, K. C. of Sioux City. He was also a member of the Cathedral of the Epiphany.

RESEARCH NOTES

His death certificate gives his birth date as August 6, 1856; parents Daniel Conway and Mary McTeruan, both born in Ireland; died at 5:30 p.m. September 13, 1933; cause, sub-diaphragmatic abscess – peritonitis; a laparotomy had been performed September 10.

In the 1900 U.S. census he and his family are living in Remsen, Plymouth County, where he is a “Traveling Collection Inp.” The 1910 U.S. census shows him living with his family in Sioux City; occupation, real estate. In the 1920 census, still in Sioux City, he is a watering system salesman.
