On last Thursday, November 18, at the hour of 4:10 in the morning there passed away at his home south of the Carnes Church, Nick C. Sjaarda, at the age of 42 years and nearly 4 months.

He was born in Pease, Minnesota where he spent the first two years of his life. After that his parents moved to Prinsburg, Minnesota where he lived until he was twelve years of age. At that time his parents came to Le Mars, Iowa, where they lived on a farm for four years, after which they moved to the Casjens farm six miles south of Orange City.

It was there Nick grew to manhood, and he lived there until March, 1937.

In the fall of 1936 he was taken to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota where he was operated on for the removal of a brain tumor. After this, however, he was no longer able to resume his farm labors, and so in the spring of this present year his family made their home upon the Reinders farm a mile north of his former home.

On December 30, 1919, he was united in marriage to Miss Dirkje Mulder, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gerke Mulder of Carnes vicinity.

This marriage was blessed with five children, namely Winifred age 17, John age 15, Clarence, age 13, Donald age 9 and Marvin of the age of nearly two years.

Nick Sjaarda was the youngest of four children: the eldest the Reverend John H. Sjaarda of Lexington, Illinois, Mrs. Ring Jasper of Orange City, and Mrs. John Steensma of Sanborn, Iowa. Also there survives him his own father Mr. Nick Sjaarda, Sr. of Orange City.

Always happy and optimistic in disposition, Nick had won for himself a wide circle of friends in his surrounding vicinity, and he retained these friendships until the end. For all the adult years of his life he had been a member of the Christian Reformed Church at Carnes.

The funeral service was held on Monday, November 22, being held at the house at 12:45 and at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City at 1:30. The Reverend Vander Werp assisted by the Reverend Dr. Bronkema were in charge of the service.

The Reverend J.H. Sjaarda, brother of the deceased, also was invited to speak at the service. Interment was in the Orange City Cemetery.
