From De Volksvriend, August 10, 1933:

MRS. J. BONNES OVERLEDEN

City wonen.

TRANSLATION

After long years of illness, which rarely allowed her to leave the house, Mrs. Jan Bonnes was lately improved enough that she could even be outside a few times. She suddenly became unwell on Wednesday afternoon, and this increased until Thursday morning at about half past six she changed the temporary for the eternal, at the age of 83 years and 10 months.

Born 27 September, 1849, in Wildervank, Groningen province, Netherlands, Engelina Eerkes joined with Jan Bonnes in marriage on 12 March 1874. In April 1885 the family emigrated to America and settled in LeMars, and shortly afterwards in Seney. There the family devoted themselves to farming, until they settled in Sioux County in 1902, and in 1912 they came to live in Orange City.

Mrs. Bonnes gave her husband 9 children, of whom 3 died in the Netherlands at a young age. Still living are Elsina (Mrs. R. H. Zimmerman) of LeMars; Grietje (Mrs. J. M. Hofland) near Orange City; Angelina (Mrs. John Hofman) of Sanborn; John Jr., of Hollandale, Minn.; Cornelia (Mrs. Ben Hofland) of Sanborn, and Cornelius of Rushmore, Minn. There are 42 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

The deceased was a loving and caring housewife and mother, who was held in high esteem by all who knew her. Her state of health was the reason she was rarely able to attend the meetings of the women’s association, but she gave support as she was able. She had a brother and a sister in the Netherlands, but they had long since passed away. Her husband, also over 83 years old, survives her. Saturday her mortal remains were consigned to the earth, under direction of Rev. R. L. Haan of Hull and Rev. R. Bronkema of here, with six grandsons serving as pallbearers.
