From the Hawarden Independent, October 24, 1963:

Jay Crowther of California Dies

Mrs. Herb C. Scott received word Monday of the death of her brother, Jay Crowther, nearly 70, former Hawarden resident who died unexpectedly at Imperial Beach, Calif.

Mr. Crowther was born in Hawarden and lived in town when his father operated a creamery here. He later engaged in farming in rural Hawarden where he resided until 1941 when he and his family moved to California.

He is survived by the widow, the former Ethel Squiers; five children; another sister, Mrs. Lillian Heald of Silverton, Ore.; a brother, Fred of Marshalltown, Iowa; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services were tentatively set for Friday at Imperial Beach.

The California Death Index shows his birth date as 18 May 1895, death date 22 Oct 1963, death place San Diego County, mother’s maiden name Coon.

The 1900 U.S. census also gives his birth date as May 1895.

His parents were George Alfred Crowther and Dolly Ann Coon. (See his father’s obituary, posted separately.)

The Sioux County, Iowa marriage register for 1913/1914 shows Jay Crowther, Kingsley, Iowa, age 22, a farmer, born in Hawarden, parents Geo. Alfred Crowther and Dolly Coon; bride Vida Coble of Hawarden, age 20, born in Missouri Valley, Iowa, parents Bert Coble and Ada McEnturff; married in Hawarden May 21, 1914. [Per his birth date, he would actually have just turned 19.] Vida died in 1924 (see her obituary, posted separately, as Veda Crowther).

Iowa Marriage Records for 1928 show groom Jay Crowther, age 34, a farmer, residence Hawarden, parents G. A. Crowther and Dollie Coon, second marriage; bride Ethel Squires, residence Hawarden, born in Elk Point, South Dakota, parents F. M. Squires and Ada Royalty, first marriage; married in Hawarden October 2, 1928.

The 1920 U.S. census shows Jay and Leda[??] Crowther, both age 24, and sons Russell (4) and Robert (1) living with his parents.

The 1930 U.S. census shows Jay (34) and Ethel (22) Crowther living in Virginia Township, Union County, South Dakota with children Russell (14, born in South Dakota), Robert (12, born in Iowa), Corrine (10, born in Iowa), and Leonard (7/12, born in South Dakota). His age at first marriage is given as 19. He is a farm laborer.

The 1940 U.S. census shows them still living in Virginia Township, South Dakota, with children Corine (19), Leonard (10), and Beatrice (5); he is a sewer project laborer.
