From the Hawarden Independent, December 19, 1929:

DEATH CLAIMS GEO. CROWTHER
Passed Away at Home of His Son Friday Morning
Was 76 Years Old and is Survived by a Widow and Five Children—Funeral Held Sunday

Geo. A. Crowther, long time resident of this community, passed away at the home of his son, Jay Crowther, southwest of Hawarden, at 8:40 last Friday morning [December 13], following a lingering illness of nearly two years’ duration. He was taken ill on Jan. 14, 1928, and has been an invalid ever since, patiently bearing up under his sufferings without complaint and calmly awaiting the time when he should be called. Several times during the past year he has been at death’s door but each time he rallied. The change that caused his death came Dec. 8th and he passed away five days later. Since last March Mr. Crowther had been bedfast and his faithful wife had scarcely left him for an hour. Her devotion and the cheerful, uncomplaining way in which she has performed her duties will ever be an example and inspiration to her children and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the Ross Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. James S. Smith, pastor of the Associated church. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery.

George Alfred Crowther was born at Elgin, Ill., June 20, 1855, so was past 74 years of age at the time of his death. He lived on a farm with his parents until about 16 years of age at which time he started to learn the cheese and butter making trade. In 1879 he moved to Waterloo, Iowa, where he remained until 1890 when he came to Hawarden and became the first buttermaker in the Hawarden creamery. He continued in this position for eleven years and after that followed this occupation in various other places as long as his health would permit. During the last few years he has been making his home with his children.

Mr. Crowther was united in marriage with Dolly Ann Coon at Waterloo, Iowa, March 17, 1880. Five children were born to this union, all of whom, with the widow, survive him. The children are Mrs. Lillie Heald of Silverton, Ore.; Mrs. Ida Scott of Hawarden; Fred Crowther of Marshalltown, Iowa; Mrs. Winnie Green of Craig, Iowa; and Jay Crowther of Hawarden. He is also survived by eighteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mr. Crowther was a man of rugged honesty and dependability and was held in high esteem by his fellow men. He was widely known among the earlier Hawarden citizens but had been here only occasionally during the past twenty-five years until his final illness. He was ever devoted to his family and in his death they have lost a kind, affectionate and devoted husband and father, while many citizens of this community have lost a true friend.
